For countless Americans, owning a home is a big part of the American Dream. June is recognized as National Homeownership Month in the US. It is a time to celebrate and promote the dream come true of owning a home and to recognize the important role that homeownership plays in building strong and stable communities. President Bill Clinton called for a weeklong observance in 1995 with the goal of increasing homeownership across the nation, and President George W. Bush expanded the observance to the entire month of June in 2002.

National Homeownership Month is a great time to buy a new home. But when making such a big decision, it is important to be prepared. If you want to buy a house, the main thing to remember is that it will be a major financial responsibility. When it comes to buying a house, you will need to build your budget based on what you can afford with your specific income. No one wants to be “house-poor,” so budgeting before buying a new house is important.  Budgeting to purchase a new home will take time and consideration. Your budget will include more than just a monthly mortgage payment; you can speak to a professional real estate agent to find out more about other costs such as homeowners’ insurance, property taxes, and maintenance expenses.

During National Homeownership Month, take the opportunity to visit government agencies, non-profits, real estate offices, and other organizations that observe the month by holding various events to share information about how to become homeowners with all the ins ad outs of the process. The events hosted by these businesses and organizations may include seminars and workshops about financing and the mortgage loan process, open houses, and other activities; they are aimed at making homeownership more accessible and affordable to people in the market to buy a property.

If you’re thinking about buying a home during National Homeownership Month this year, budgeting is your first step.
