When it comes to beach houses, while there are many different things that are great to do involving them, there are other things that should be equally avoided in order to ensure that you are able to create a coastal space that is both functional and chic.

Here are three of the most important dos and dont’s when it comes to beach houses.

DOS

Always take the time to give your beach house a more overarching style. According to many different interior design experts, especially those who specialize in beach houses, there are all sorts of different styles that range from nautical to contemporary when it comes to beach houses. All of these styles can work well together provided they’re executed as tastefully as possible and they don’t end up going crazy in terms of a more “themed” look. Take a moment to always consider your own personal style, using it as your specific base with a select few nautical-themed accents.

It’s also a good idea to pay tribute to a more coastal style with a beach house. Rather than covering a space with something such as fish netting, consider paying tribute to a coastal style in a more classic and chic manner. For instance, utilize fish netting, but do so as a curtain tie-back.

Consider getting inspired by all of your surroundings. For instance, if you’re having trouble coming up with the perfect color palette, all you have to do is simply take a look outside in order to get all of the inspiration that you need. These colors could include muted oranges, muted reds, striking turquoise, creams, and whites.

DONT’S

Under no circumstances should you ever rule out any design colors. As long as a color is executed in the right manner, it can always be used, even if it’s in a property such as a beach house. For instance, the color black can even be used in a beach house provided it’s done so in a manner that won’t cause the overall look and feel of the space to feel visibly uncomfortable.

When it comes to beach houses, never install wall-to-wall carpet. Keep in mind that when it comes to the beach, there is a lot of humidity involved with that specific type of environment. Because of this, carpets will always generally tend to get musty. Absolutely no space in a beach house should contain any kind of wall-to-wall carpeting; however, area rugs are perfectly acceptable, as these specific accent pieces will never create any kind of an issue regardless of wherever they’re placed in the home.

Never forget to include artwork on the walls of the beach house. This is perhaps the best way to add a sense of personality to the interior of the house itself. The choice of artwork that can be added is ultimately up to you; however, the general rule of thumb is that it should always fit well with the color scheme and accents of the interior itself.
