On September 11, 2001, the United States of America faced a terrorist attack unlike any in prior history, when terrorists hijacked four airplanes and used them as weapons, flying three into targetted buildings and one into an open field when passengers attempted to stop the attackers. It was a dark day in our history that took nearly 3000 human lives and caused major injury to over 6000 others. This year marks the 20th anniversary of that heinous assault on America and its foundation of freedom and democracy. We observe September 11th as a day of remembrance to honor all those who made haste to render aid and remember all those who lost their lives that day.
In Corpus Christi, Texas and the surrounding area, several remembrance events and service opportunities have been planned. One of the events is a memorial motorcycle ride sponsored by Corpus Christi Harley-Davidson in honor of the 13 fallen US service members that were killed recently in the Kabul, Afghanistan airport attack, followed by a store event where the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks will be observed.
Stair climb events have also been planned. One is the 2071 Steps event at the YMCA of the Coastal Bend. People are encouraged to walk 2071 steps or climb 110 flights of stairs in honor of the first responders who lost their lives climbing to save people in the Twin Towers of New York’s World Trade Center on that Tuesday in 2001.
Another 9/11 event is First Responders Night at the Hooks. The local Double-A baseball team honors first responders on the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks by offering discounted tickets to those heroes and displaying a 9/11 memorial mural painted by a local artist before its installation at a Corpus Christi Fire Station.
September 11th is a federally designated National Day of Service and Remembrance that calls people to express their appreciation for the heroes of the day and to never forget their sacrifice in the face of terrorism. Check local news sources for more details on these and other 9/11 remembrance events in the area.
