Corpus Christi ISD – It’s time to head back to school! Though the lazy days of summer no doubt will be missed, families must begin thinking about the more structured days ahead. Read on for three simple tips to control–or at least contain–the clutter, even before the new school year begins.

  1. Keeping Track of People and All Their Stuff

One of the first things to do to get organized before the kids go back to school is to consider schedules. It is important to get off to an organized start, and putting a dry erase calendar where everyone can see it can be the key. Not only does it help family members stay on top of household chores, but it also allows everyone to easily keep track of school meetings and  events, sports practice and game schedules, and extracurricular activities. Adding family fun and other obligations helps everyone plan and manage their time better.

  1. Making Time to Purge

Taking time to clean out closets is another key to keeping back-to-school clutter at bay. Why? Because clutter can attract clutter; so purging and donating or tossing out broken things that are no longer useful is an excellent step to take as summer winds down. Evaluate which clothing still fits (and is in dress code if necessary) as well. Pile too-small items into a hand-me-down box for younger siblings, or to donate somewhere like a children’s shelter. Dispose of any clothing items that are overly worn–find a clothing recycling organization or find your own ways to upcycle those things. Getting rid of things you no longer need will help you control the clutter.

  1. Doing Homework

Dealing with last year’s backpacks now is an excellent step towards containing the clutter in your home. First, sort any of last year’s homework and art pieces and get rid of what you can before the collection begins for the upcoming school year. Throw out the things from the previous school year that lay dormant over the summer inside old backpacks and desk drawers, except a very few keepsake pieces. Not every spelling list, reading log, or math worksheet must be kept…just the most meaningful or most representative things.
