June is National Camping Month, an excellent time to unplug, pack a tent and sleeping bag, and head into the great outdoors. Observed since the 1970s, National Camping Month is often when people choose to kick off the summer by reconnecting with nature. There are countless locations to pitch a tent or park an RV across America, many of which can be found throughout the state of Texas. Some of the most popular camping spots in the Lone Star State are along the Texas Gulf Coast.
If you’re interested in a beach camping experience, consider going to Texas cities on the Gulf of Mexico. The coastal cities have campsites available in state parks and national parks, as well as in private campgrounds and resorts. The Lone Star State has over 360 miles of coastline; the beaches of the Texas coast and the barrier islands in the Gulf offer tons of opportunities for camping adventures.
Because there are several camping options along the coast, you will be able to park an RV, pitch a tent at a primitive campsite, or set up camp at a sheltered site. Some of the Texas Gulf Coast beaches where you can camp are Sea Rim State Park in Port Arthur, Mustang Island State Park in Corpus Christi, and North Beach and South Beach on Padre Island.
Sea Rim State Park has 15 campsites available next to the beach and boardwalk in Port Arthur. Some of the sites have electricity, a water hookup, and a tent pad, and include a picnic table and outdoor grill. There are also 75 primitive campsites and one boat-accessible site (adjacent to the marsh in the park).
Mustang Island State Park is another great camping spot on the coast; it is a barrier island across the bay from the city of Corpus Christi. Mustang Island State Park has 48 campsites with electricity located several yards from the water and 50 primitive campsites that are on a 1.5 miles stretch of the sandy beach.
Padre Island National Seashore is a national park on Padre Island; this barrier island has beaches for year-round camping at North Beach and South Beach. Some areas are open to RV campers (but have no hookups) or tent campers, specifically in the two seafront campgrounds; other areas right on the beach are available for primitive camping.
